Tell me about yourself?
I was always creative as a child, making up stories to entertain my
friends and family -- and that still holds true today. I have taken
writing courses to improve my techniques and have learned a lot
through observation and meditation. I love writing, and I also
really love animals.
My best buddy is my talented little African Grey parrot, Jewel.
Everyone asks about her; she's been a hit with some of the online
chats I've done. She has been featured in different bird magazines
because she is quite the talker. She knows names of colors, foods,
and people -- and she also enjoys dancing and singing. She's a
hoot!
What do you do for fun?
Besides writing -- I live to travel; especially to warm, tropical
places like the Caribbean. The Caribbean had me at hello. Or more
fittingly--"hey mon." Fishermen in fuchsia canoes highlighted
against the setting sun, double rainbows anointing the sea, ladies
walking along sandy roads in their long colorful flowing skirts
while carrying large hand-woven baskets on their heads, and flowers
ablaze with more colors than a painter's palette could hold. These
islands are rich not only in nature, but also in culture -- and
they charm the flip flops off of me!
Tell me about your business(s) [what you
sell/do/etc]?
I write books and present workshops, helping kids deal with
bullying and improve self-esteem. Through personal counseling, I
talk many out of suicide, helping them restore self-respect. I
spend 24/7 working with parents, educators, and children's health
organizations internationally. Receiving numerous requests, I help
everyone, and aside from my book/video orders, I work mostly
without pay. TV and radio shows call frequently for help in
producing shows that are healing for victims.
Handicapped children thanking me for making them feel better about themselves, and abused children saying they are no longer afraid, move me forward to continue saving children's lives every day.
How long have you been a Mom Entrepenuer?
I have been successfully researching and writing about bullying
since 1996.
When we lead a life of service to others, it raises our self-esteem and helps us to live in integrity, which is the root to healthiness and happiness. When you find peace within yourself, you can find peace in the world.
What made you get into the business?
When best-selling author, Dr. Jay Carter, wrote his self-help book
about invalidation (adult bullying!), "Nasty People," he received
many letters from readers whose lives he helped and changed. Many
were parents who requested he write a children's version to help
their kids/teens. After 8 years of searching for the right person
to write this version of his best-selling book, he found me.
He had placed an ad in the personals looking for a co-author. I sent him writing samples of my children's stories. He chose me out of about 100 people who sent him their information and writings. Dr. Carter says he feels I have an original style of writing and the ability to talk with young people on their level. He felt I was perfect for the project -- and I didn't want to let him down. So I worked on "Taking the Bully by the Horns" day and night, interviewing older and younger people on both bullying and self-esteem issues. The rest (as they say) is history. I'm proud of, and extremely grateful for, the positive results of my accomplishment.
"Taking the Bully by the Horns" was written because there is a need for it. Bullying has become a very serious & timely topic. We're seeing more and more trouble with bullies in the news…everywhere. Some have driven other children to suicide and murder.
Bullying has been around for as long as people have been around, but it's only been recently that we've become aware enough to do something about it.
What motivates you?
Saving lives. I'm driven by people's genuine pleas for help within
the personal stories I receive about their abused
students/children. Sometimes I get angry; usually it makes me sad.
But always -- I'm motivated to want to help and protect all of
them. It's deeply rewarding when a child tells me things such as,
"Thank you, you saved my life. I'm not afraid anymore," and "You
helped me so much."
One little boy with a leg missing was getting teased at his school. He opened my book as a gift from his mother on Christmas morning and didn't put it down until he finished. He then said, "I feel a lot better about myself now; this is the best book I ever read."
When his mother told me this -- it moved me to tears. This is the reason I wrote "Taking the Bully by the Horns."
Can you recommend any good resources/websites?
"Taking the Bully by the Horns," has won National Awards for
"Saving Children's Lives, Making the World a Better Place, and
Empowering Those in Need." This book covers the serious issues of
bullying, school violence and low self-esteem. It is the children's
version of Dr. Jay Carter's best-selling book, "Nasty People," and
is designed to bolster the self-respect and self-esteem of both the
victims and the bullies.
